Women in Black Art Project
Photographs by Colleen Young, © 2002, Women in Black Art Project

The Struggle Costume, which honors women worldwide who have been imprisoned, tortured or killed for their activism in behalf of peace and women's human rights, is emblazoned on the back and the front of the cape, with a peace symbol, resembling graffiti, heavily distressed, and divided. This symbolizes the divisions within the peace movements, where women have been the backbone, but have been invisible. Photographs of women imprisoned, tortured and killed are collaged onto the skirt and the cape.
