Twenty-five years have passed since the Feminist Art Movement began, a milestone that was documented slightly before its time by Amelia Jones' ambitious exhibition Sexual Politics, which appeared in 1996 at the University of California - Los Angeles' Armand Hammer Art Museum and Cultural Center. The catalogue for that exhibition contains a rich variety of essays by women who played leading roles in feminist artmaking. Many feminist organizations have since celebrated their 25th anniversaries; mainstream institutions have also recognized pioneering feminist artists and critics. The College Art Association bestowed prestigious awards on artist Miriam Schapiro and critic Dr. Arlene Raven. Dr. Elizabeth Sackler presented Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and funded the Sackler Center for Feminist Art. Both The Dinner Party and the Sackler Center are expected to open in late 2006 or early 2007. Artwomen presents here two essays by women who took part in early feminist art activism and education. We invite you to submit your histories, especially those of you who can tell us about what took place outside the better-documented East and West Coast cities in the U.S. There is much to remember and many valuable documents are too brief to see publication in book form. We hope that Artwomen is a place where feminist art history can be enriched by your reminiscences.
