BIOGRAPHY: Susan Fisher Sterling

Susan Fisher Sterling is Chief Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.. Dr. Sterling holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and served as a Smithsonian Fellow at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., prior to joining the staff of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in 1988 as Associate Curator. Dr. Sterling oversees all aspects of exhibitions planning and collections management at the museum. Recent exhibitions include: Carrie Mae Weems; UltraModern: the Art of Contemporary Brazil; Esther Mahlangu: the Ndebele Mural Project; Sarah Charlesworth: A Retrospective; and Virgin Territory, coorganized with the São Paulo Bienal. Dr. Sterling is currently working on an exhibition related to women artists and multi-media.
